ABERTRIDWR LIBRARY GETS A NEW MAKE OVER
A Caerphilly county borough library, which has undergone extensive refurbishment works to improve its disabled access and completely renew its internal spaces, has been opened by Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM, Minister for Heritage.
The newly refurbished Abertridwr Library was officially opened by the Heritage Minister on World Book Day (Thursday 6 March 2008). In excess of £230,000 was spent on the refurbishing project, which was jointly funded by funded by Caerphilly County Borough Council and the Welsh Assembly Government.
On the day, the Minister joined council officials and local assembly member Jeff Cuthbert to experience a programme of magical entertainment, including a range of library displays, music by harpist Eleri Darkins, and a story telling session for local school children. Abertridwr Library is the first library in Caerphilly county borough to house a self-service kiosk, which provides customers with the freedom to loan and return their own books. The service enables staff to spend more time engaging with its customers and effectively promote the library.
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM, Minister for Heritage said:
“I am delighted to be here to open these new facilities on a day that is all about celebrating the pleasure of reading. These changes will significantly improve the user experience and will doubtless encourage more people to take advantage of the range of services on offer.
Libraries act as social and cultural hubs and play a very important role in our communities. One Wales, our programme of Government commits us to developing and improving libraries across Wales, working in partnership with local government
to deliver a truly 21st century library network.”
