ABER VALLEY MALE VOICE CHOIR - NEARLY 50!
Next Year 2009, will be a very special year
in the history of the Aber Valley Male Voice
Choir as it celebrates its 50th anniversary .
From day one, when the committee of the
Aber & Senghenydd Ex-Sevicemen's Club,
Senghenydd invited David John Evans, a
product of Senghenydd and Barrie Owens,
son of the local barber in Abertridwr, to form
a male choir at the club little did they realise
that they had started something that was to
last 50 years with great distinction.
The first rehearsals were a bit of a shambles when Dai John produced music sheets
Some of the men were there for just a bit of a sing-song. No, this was not the idea! Dai John persevered and built the choir up to about 60 men who were successful in Eisteddfodau fo a number of years. They gave a number of outstanding concerts
every year and capped it in the 60's with a trip to Ludwigsburg, West Germany, where they exchanged on many occasions with the Chorvereinigung, a mixed choral society.
In 1971 a young Senghenydd man was invited to take the baton from Dai John - this was Geraint Evans, who still stands proudly in front of the choir. He was lucky in so much that he came from a family with a history of conductors. His two grandfathers conducted male, mixed and children's choir, whilst his uncle Dai John conducted the local YMCA choir, the Aber Valley Choral Society and, of course, the Aber Valley Male Voice.
Eighteen months ago the choir sang its 1000th performance- no mean achievement.
The choir has made numerous recordings and Cd albums the latest being the 1000th performance they are currently recorgind a New CD to celebrate the 50 years.
Anybody interested in joining the choir, or purchasing a recording or memrobilia then please contact Geraint Evans on 029 20884060 or jgevansuk@yahoo.co.uk . The choir's website is www.aber-valleymvc.co.uk here you will find lots of information about the choir.
