VOLUNTEER TO BE A GOOD FRIEND
Could you volunteer to befriend an adult with a learning disability, who has
similar interests and hobbies to your own?
The Volunteer Befriending Scheme within Social Services, Caerphilly County Borough Council, encourages people to spend a little of their spare time getting to know adults with l earning disabilities. The success of the i nitiative means there is an increased demand for more volunteers.
Peter Burrage joined the scheme in 2006 and hasn’t looked back! Peter is a keen rugby fan and was paired up with Jamie Roberts of Caerphilly, who also loves rugby and they now go along to local matches together.Speaking at Caerphilly rugby ground, Jamie said: “Peter is a good laugh and I enjoy watching the rugby with him. I look forward to going to the game with him every week.“First, we go the clubhouse for a coke, then we watch the match afterwards – I love it! The fans and some of the rugby players wave to me when they see me. I have made a lot of friends thanks to Peter.”
Peter said:“I ve always wanted to do voluntary work and I thought this would be the i deal way of getting into it. When I saw a leaflet on befriending as I work in Caerphilly, I thought that I would go for it and I got in touch with Sharon Savory the Scheme manager.
The Volunteer Befriending Scheme manager, Sharon Savory, said:
“Becoming a volunteer befriender can be a life changing experience for both of the people involved. It can be exceptionally rewarding and worthwhile, and I would like to thank all my existing volunteers for their continued support and commitment. I encourage anyone thinking about volunteering to get in touch for an informal chat – we would love to here from you!”
