RUGBY ICON AT ABER VALLEY CARNIVAL

What a day we all had at the annual Aber Valley Carnival and Fete held on July  12th at the Rugby Ground, Senghenydd, although there was some rain – nobody  cared!  Welsh Rugby star Colin Charvis arrived to open the event and although  intended it to be a short visit he stayed for several hours.  He signed more  autographs and had his photo taken than any pop star!  He was joined by the  Lady Mayor of Caerphilly Coun Ann Collins, who also managed to get  photographs taken with him!  The Carnival procession was led to the field by the  magnificently attired Welsh Piping Society, who also entertained on the field as  did our own youngsters from the Windsor School of Dance.  Every child taking  part in the procession was awarded a certificate to keep as a memento.

Sport was the order of the day and we were fortunate to have the Glamorgan  County Cricket Club Community Officer, Peter Edwards with their brand new  transit van that opens up into training nets etc – his next calls was the Big  Cheese & Royal Welsh – so another first for the Valley.

The Children’s Marquee housed “Retro Sports” and the team organising it were  exhausted by the shear exuberance of the competitors, the Volunteers Marquee  was extremely busy and the Concert/Refreshment Marquee did a roaring trade.   Mike Cook DJ and Leon entertained throughout the afternoon and there was  music for everyone, including the Aber Valley Male Voice Choir and Nant y  Parc’s Brass Ensemble and singing from the after school Environmental Club.   Another highlight was the second annual “Welsh Gurning Competition” -  lots of laughs and prizes!

All in all it was a fantastic day – especially as it was almost cancelled through lack of funding.  Thanks to the support of the Aber Valley Community Council who stepped in at the last moment with financial help, together with donations from local residents and businesses and the hard work and innovative ideas of the new committee members it became a fantastic day out for the whole community.
